Choosing a hairdresserConsultations, portfolios and the questions worth asking. The short version
Most good hair days come down to a handful of habits. If you only take a few things away from this site, take these:
- Work with your texture, not against it. Straight, wavy, curly and coily hair need different amounts of moisture and handling. Knowing your hair type makes every other choice easier.
- Shampoo the scalp, condition the lengths. The scalp makes the oil; the ends are the oldest, driest part of the hair. Washing and conditioning explains how often and how much.
- Treat heat as a tool, not a habit. Lower temperatures, a heat protectant and fewer passes do more for shine than any serum. See heat styling without the damage.
- Always patch test before colour. Hair dye allergies can be serious, and a reaction can appear even if you have used the same product before. Our colour guide explains why.
- Talk to your hairdresser properly. Photos, honest answers about your routine and a clear idea of how much time you spend styling make for better cuts. See choosing a hairdresser.
Who this site is for
Anyone who wants to understand their own hair a little better: people trying to break a cycle of breakage and frizz, people thinking about colouring for the first time, people with curls who were never shown how to look after them, and people who just want a haircut that still looks good on day four. The guides are general and apply to most hair, but everyone's hair is different, so treat them as a starting point and adjust to what you see in the mirror.
Hair by Fuz is independent. We are not a salon, we don't sell products and we don't accept payment to mention brands. If your scalp is sore, your hair is shedding more than usual or you have a reaction to a product, please speak to a pharmacist or a doctor rather than relying on a website.
